Liechtenstein

liechtenstein"Since the 1950's, the Principality of Liechtenstein has developed rapidly from an agrarian State into a modern industrial nation. This development has left its mark on the structure of Liechtenstein agriculture. While there were still over 1300 agricultural operations in 1955, most of which cultivated an area of less that 5 hectares, the number of operations sank to less than 400 by the 1990's. In 2005, only 130 farms were still active. Fewer, but more efficient and modern operations have replaced the many small operations. 45% of the gross agricultural return comes from the dairy industry. Some 60 dairy farms produced 13 million kg milk in 2007.

The agricultural sector does not play an important role as employer anymore. In 2007, only one per cent of all the employees in Liechtenstein worked in agriculture and gardening. In addition to feed production for animal husbandry, the cultivation of vegetables has gained importance in recent years, using the narrow strip of arable land between the mountain range and the Rhine. Thanks to the warm southerly wind, the Föhn, the slopes of the mountains facing the Rhine can be used for wine growing. Forestry accounts for 1.1% of the persons employed in the agricultural and forestry sector. While 41% of the entire territory of Liechtenstein is forested, these forests are sensitive Alpine forests in the mountains and protected meadow forests in the valley."

Public Sector

"The State contributes significantly to the preservation of healthy agriculture through various direct subsidies. Agriculture that is ecological and animal-friendly is given special support.

The Office of Agriculture  (Landwirtschaftamt) is a counseling and information service and contact point for farmers and interested persons in connection with agriculture in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

It is responsible for the execution of various agricultural laws and develops positions on agricultural matters for the attention of the Government.

The Office of Forests, Nature and Land Management(Amt für Wald, Natur und Landschaft, AWNL)provides information on all questions concerning forestry in Liechtenstein. It is also the contact point with respect to preservation of nature and landscape, forest animals, hunting, protection against natural disasters, development of rural areas, and integral rehabilitation of mountainous areas. It also undertakes scientific research and administers various collections."
