Prolinnova - together with the EU-funded project JOint Learning in Innovation Systems in African Agriculture (JOLISAA) coordinated by CIRAD, France; the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and the AusAID-funded project Food System Innovation for Food Security (FSIFS) - have joined forces in exploring approaches to enhance knowledge-to-action linkages among actors in agricultural innovation systems in Africa. They will hold an International Workshop on Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa (AISA), where experiences from various institutions and initiatives will be shared in order to increase our understanding of multi-stakeholder innovation processes in agriculture, with a focus on recognising the role of smallholder farmers – both men and women – in innovation. The workshop should lead to identification of priorities for research, practice and policy to strengthen innovation process in smallholder agriculture.

For developing countries, agriculture is crucial for economic growth, through its role in food security, and in addressing global issues such as bio-energy, climate change, etc. Agricultural research responds to the needs to feed growing populations and to drive economic growth in a sustainable manner.
ERA-ARD will address these issues through improving coordination and collaboration between national research programmes. The current, second phase of ERA-ARD is a € 1 million project funded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework Programme and will run from 2010 to 2013. The project is a partnership of 17 organisations involved with funding agricultural research for development in 15 European countries.

The mainpurpose of this seminar traditionally is to share the ideas and practices of the participants on participatory approach to agricultural extension works. As usual this year we'll see and listen the best practice in extension between public and private extension services around the world starting from Europe. We have the possibilities to discuss and argue and to adopt them in other countries, and to meet good friends during years. We pack the best new ideas from ESEE to our own countries.

Agriculture in the post-Soviet states of Central Asia and the Caucasus continues to be of central importance for securing individual livelihoods in the region. At present, the agricultural sector employs about half of the region’s workforce; a high percentage of the population lives in rural areas. Total revenues from agriculture in the region count between one quarter and one third of annual national GDPs. However, the development of the agrarian sector is very heterogeneous. Despite constant economic growth of the sector, overall production of staple crops is often not sufficient to satisfy national needs with high poverty levels especially in the rural areas.
Conference Themes
- Cultures of knowledge production and sharing in agriculture
- Local governance arrangements and knowledge production
- Agricultural advisory service development

The theme of the 2014 congress is 'Horticulture - sustaining lives, livelihoods and landscapes'. We've chosen this theme to highlight the unique potential of horticulture addressing the key issues of modern society - health, poverty, food production and the environment. Horticulture matters to us all, whether we are involved in research, extension, education, or servicing horticulture in commercial, amenity or environmental horticulture, in both developed or developing countries. In the spirit of scientific cooperation and sharing knowledge globally, the Congress will showcase advanced technologies that are becoming globally significant in a world with a rapidly growing population, less cultivatable land and an environment under threat.
